- <p> DIED. PRINCE LOUIS FERDINAND OF PRUSSIA, 86, grandson of Kaiser
- Wilhelm II; in Bremen, Germany. Louis Ferdinand would have sat
- on the throne of Germany--but for the fact that there was
- no throne to sit on after his country's defeat in World War
- I. Instead, he engaged in such unprincely pursuits as working
- at a Detroit auto plant in the '30s. A German pilot instructor
- in World War II, Louis Ferdinand had links with the conspirators
- who planned the unsuccessful attempt on Hitler's life in 1944.
- Some of the plotters proposed that he assume leadership of the
- state after Hitler's demise--as close as the prince ever came
- to a shot at his ancestral day job.
